The Nogales Project

The group, Andrew and Woody Fridae, Cecil Padilla, Mike and Janet Kimes, flew to Tucson, rented a car and drove down to Green Valley Arizona, and spent the night in a Green Valley Rotarian's town house. The next day they drove to the project site in Nogales Mexico. Nogales is a border town and the project site is the Casa Misericordia  (House of Mercy). The Misericordia functions as sort of a community center, day care for the folks working in the border factories, education for the local folks in job related skills and a place for the kids to play.

The group stayed in dormitories on site for four nights and worked during the day. They painted the outside of a new building, the decorations on the inside of the dining hall, installed pedestal sinks in two class rooms, built a basketball court and put new tables together for the dining hall. They found it easy to go into Mexico but the return trip took at least 2 hours sitting at the border -- passports are required. Cecil, Janet and Mike went back in March of 2006 and converted two bathrooms into office space.
